AUBURN, CA (MPG) - Set in the starkly beautiful Bolivian highlands, this moving drama of devotion and survival centers on elderly lama farmers Virginio and his wife Sisa. Their tranquil life has remained unchanged for many years, until they are forced to deal with the effects of an uncommonly long drought.
While Virginio takes their small herd of llamas out to graze, Sisa keeps house and walks for miles with other local women to fetch precious water. When the water dries up, they must decide whether to stay and maintain their traditional way of life or admit defeat and move in with family members in the city.
Sponsored by Dean Prigmore and Patrice Taylor, “Utama” (translated as "our home") won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Barbara Alvarez’s cinematography sets the vibrant colors of domestic life against arresting widescreen shots of rural Bolivia's cracked earth and a (stunningly photogenic) herd of llamas.
“(A) film of dazzling visual power and genuine poignancy," said Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com.
