PLACER COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Audition submissions are now being accepted to fill paid roles in the Placer Repertory Theater Spring 2025 lively stage reading of a new play, Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four, that will tour April 24 through May 2 to three venues in the Greater Sacramento Area. Most of the character tracks are not pre-cast, including Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, a track for a character actor, and the ingénue Miss Mary Morstan.
Performers interested in participating in Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four lively stage reading may submit an email cover letter with resume, headshot and URL to an audition video or digital recording of a prior performance to [email protected]. Early career to seasoned performers and those who seek to matriculate from community theater or preparatory programs are encouraged to apply. Both nonunion and union performers may apply. Performers are paid for rehearsals and performances. All ethnicities and gender identities are welcomed and encouraged to submit materials. Successful submissions are offered an audition appointment. Audition appointments begin Friday, March 21, and the show will be cast before the end of March.
According to the playwright, “This comedic detective story, based upon the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, explores the passive aggressive nature inherent in close relationships. The dueling narrators, Holmes & Watson, recount the famous case of The Sign of the Four, while revealing their opposing viewpoints on the human experience and the struggles related to power and status shifts in relationships, even as the plot exhibits the rippling damage done as characters pursue their individual dark ambitions. An ensemble cast of 5 or more actors portray the many colorful characters who inhabit this exciting play for general audiences.
Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four is the final 2024-2025 main season offering. Prior seasons’ themes included ‘Seeing Red’ and ‘The Two-Sided Coin of Desire & Fear,’ which prefaced the company’s 2024-2025 theme. “What seemed an appropriate theme for our times is “Dark Ambitions,” said Producing Artistic Director Teresa Stirling Forsyth. “No matter what side you are on regarding any conflict, the situation is ripe for one or both factions to ‘take things too far,’ which inevitably leads to direct and collateral damage. This season’s plays were selected because they represented the pursuit of an ambition at great cost to individuals (Sherlock), families/allies (Corsican Brothers), or to a nation (Macbeth).”
