“This year more than ever, families need assistance"

AUBURN, CA (MPG) -  Looking to make a difference and give back to the community during this unprecedented time? Placer County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is currently seeking volunteers for the 2021 tax season.

The program, operating in conjunction with United Way and the IRS, offers free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families in Placer County with an income of approximately $65,000 or less. This year, things will look a bit different, as volunteers and clients connect virtually from the safety of their own homes.

VITA program volunteers work one-on-one with clients to help them file taxes and maximize refunds. No prior experience is needed, as training is provided. Coordinators will also be available to assist volunteers with any questions.

Using an online platform, volunteers will be assigned to review client documents, conduct over-the-phone interviews and prepare or review tax returns. All correspondence with clients is done through the online platform including emails, text messaging and phone calls.

Last year, the program generated close to $447,000 in refunds for hundreds of Placer County residents.

“This year more than ever, families need assistance to maximize their refunds and keep their hard earned dollars in their pockets,” said Human Services Director Amanda Sharp. “Those dollars in turn can help support local businesses and boost the local economy, as we continue to navigate the effects of COVID-19.”
